29-12-2004: Another MiniHost update!

A quick maintenance update for MiniHost today.
- MIDI ports correctly initialized on startup now
- registering now works without being logged in as administrator
- fixed a tiny GUI bug

24-12-2004: Merry Christmas!

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Not a real "present" as it contains only minor updates, but here is a new
version of my MiniHost for you!

Changes in MiniHost 1.08:
- now multiple MIDI-Ins and Outs are possible at the same time!
- new option to toggle automatic loading of last plugin on start
- stability of ASIO engine improved
- plugin calls to debug breakpoints or "int 3" are intercepted and ignored
- "Wusikstation" and "Eve" should work correctly now
- MIDI file player timing improved
- manual was updated

In case some of you didn't know, there is also an experimental (and
unsupported) extension pack for MiniHost that includes four simple addons.

25-11-2004: Some updates

Sorry, no updates during the last weeks - there is something called "real life"
that keeps me from sitting in front of my computer day and night coding like a
mad bear :-)

But I managed to squeeze out a new version of MiniHost!

Changes in MiniHost 1.07:
- opening multiple WAV/MID files at once is now possible
- preset switching improved
- drag n' drop of multiple files now works
- improved unloading of ASIO driver
- preset names updated after bank load now works correctly
- support for removable (USB/FW) ASIO cards
- ASIO component code optimized for AMD CPUs, thanks to Christian Budde
- support for French AZERTY computer keyboard layout
- manual updated
- various other bugfixes and improvements

Furthermore, my GFXUtils package has been updated with new versions of
these little tools.

There is also a new version of my LucasRipper program vailable that allows
you to view the graphics in the popular LucasArts computer games.

09-10-2004: Toby on the road

I will be in Vienna and Prague for the next 10 days and probably won't be able
to answer my mails or post in the forum. You can still donate or buy a plugin and
will receive your registration data immediately when I am back.

Tobybear logging off...

08-10-2004: More GFX utilities!

Sorry, no audio software updates today, instead an update of my GFXUtils package:
All utilities have been updated and two new ones added: TGA2PNG for batch
converting TGA files to PNG images, preserving the alpha channel information and
T-Rip, a file ripper for common multimedia formats.

There is also a new program LucasRipper available that allows you to look at
the background images and animations from the popular LucasArts games.

03-10-2004: MiniHost 1.06!

Yet another MiniHost version was released, it is now at 1.06.

Changes:
- numerical input of speed values and bpm is now possible by clicking on the text
  labels with the value
- CC bug when preset switching fixed
- improved color detection scheme for dark GUIs

- ASIO info is now written to the log file when the info button is pressed

22-09-2004: New stuff!

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I was busy with real life and my diploma thesis.

But here is finally a new version of MiniHost, now at 1.05.

Changes:
- minimum required donation for disabling the nag screen is now $15
- CC-Mapper included, it allows you to map any MIDI CC# to any plugin's
parameter with a user-derfined range. All ranges and CCs can be defined
for each parameter and each plugin and are saved as part of each plugin's
  settings file
- loading of presets from plugins with chunk and parameter support now works,
  eg. with rgcAudio's Pentagon 1
- samplerate was not transmitted correctly to plugin with some ASIO drivers
- rec button is now red, play buttons green

multiple VST folders can be set, new plugins are automatically scanned and
detected at startup, new menus for all plugins or only effects or only plugins, ...
- no more hanging notes when using the shift-key to transpose notes
- dragging a plugin's GUI control with the mouse, then releasing over a button
of the MiniHost GUI does no longer trigger that button

disabled while dialog is open, user color can now be set by entering RGB values
- optional output limiter (saturation unit)
- MIDI file output limit to channel 1 works again

- about dialog now centered on current screen
- improved ASIO driver info
- VST host and ASIO host components improved

Oh, by the way, my newsletter works again, so if you want to receive an email
whenever there is a new version of my programs, subscribe here.

20-08-2004: Restructuring...

I decided to restructure my older shareware bundles. From now on, there is no
longer a ModBag, WackoBag or FunBag, but instead they are all available as one
MonsterBag (14 weird effect plugins!). And best of all, it does now only cost $45
(instead of $35 for each of the three bundles before).

More restructuring:
 - VSTNETMID has finally been merged with the MidiBag
 - DMOBag has been merged with the SourceBag

Why did I do this? Well, it is simply easier to maintain and less confusing than lots
of single downloads.

By the way, MiniHost has been updated to version 1.04 some time ago already, but
I forgot to post it here :-)

Changes:
- plugins now sorted by their DLL name, not by the name they return
- plugins that support only processReplacing but not process are now supported
- bug on WAV playback with empty playlist fixed
- nasty "crash on exit" bug fixed
- VSTSpy list is now sorted by effect name
- faster internal preset handling
- VSTSpy improved
- double-clicking on plugins in VSTSpy works again
- better performance for demo-only plugins with "no saving" message
boxes like Rhino 2 or eJ (preset manager window has to be closed though)
- GalactiX working now
- VSTSpy does now only scan files with DLL extension
- improved preset change behaviour

13-05-2004: Keep those updates coming...

Three updates today:

MiniHost has been updated to 0.9c! This version does not add any new features,
but rather improves stability and compatibility with certain ASIO drivers. If you had
problems with the previous release (and also if you didn't), please download this
new version
Changes include:
- many improvements in ASIO driver
- MIDI port setting saved properly now
- improved closing/switching of plugins
- stuck keys on virtual keyboard fixed
- warning if trying to open several instances
- internal VSTSpy improved (see below)
- lots of major and minor internal bugfixes and improvements
- donationware reminder counter decreased to 7 seconds :-)

VSTSpy has been further improved, scanning should now work even better. Also
the plugin info was not always saved correctly and it could sometimes crash when
trying to load certain plugins - this should all work better now.

Finally, FilterExplorer (demo and pro, VST and standalone) has been updated
to version 1.6! Registered users should have received a mail by now with a new
download link for their update.
Changes include:
- drag n' drop support for *.flt files
- fixed many bugs in C++ class export
- optionally white noise as input signal in VST version
- warning is issued if a file/class already exists on export
- some minor bugs fixed

11-05-2004: Updates for MiniHost and VSTSpy released!

MiniHost has been updated to 0.9b! Lots of new features (like apreggiator, chord
maker, chord analyzer and step-sequencer) have been added, but please bear in
mind that it is still not a final "1.0" release! The audio/MIDI output still has problems
with certain ASIO drivers and sound cards, but I am constantly working on it :-)

VSTSpy has been improved a bit by fixing some smaller bugs. It is still freeware and
can be downloaded from here.

10-05-2004: VSTSpy released!

Another new program called VSTSpy!

VST-Spy is a little program that analyzes all VST plugin DLLs in your VST folder and
displays useful information it gets from the plugins.

VSTSpy is freeware and can be downloaded from here.

05-05-2004: MiniHost released!

Long time no update, but now I'm back with a bang!

MiniHost is a new donationware program by me.

It is a full-fledged ASIO host that loads VST plugins (instruments and effects).
It offers many features that similar programs don't have. Here are just some
of them:

- send MIDI data to VST plugins from external MIDI inputs, a resizable virtual MIDI
keyboard, the computer keyboard or MIDI files

- process ASIO inputs or a WAV file

- record audio output to WAV (16 and 32 bit)

- browse through the presets

- included preset manager, allows easy organisation of all presets

- included preset randomizer with script support and mutate option

- drag n' drop support

- much much more ...

By donating any amount of money, you will receive a registration code that will
make the daily donationware remainder disappear and put your name in the
about box.

Even better, the Delphi source code of the core application will be made available
in the near future, allowing you to create your own ASIO/VST host!

25-03-2004: Some news and updates

I will be at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt on Saturday, April 03 2004 (public
visitor day) - not as an exhibitor, only as a visitor. If anyone wants to meet me
there just drop me a
mail.

The VSTHost Delphi component has been updated again by me and Christian Budde!
It does now have improved ASIO capabilities (multiple output support), better
VstTimeInfo support, preset and "canDo" handling and MIDI input support for playing
VST synths or controlling effects.

Then the link to the Mac version of RoboBear Basic has been fixed. This Mac
conversion is quite old, was not done by me and is totally unsupported,
but maybe someone can use it.

And finally, there is a supposedly "cracked" version of Deconstructor Pro floating
around the net. This is however the regular (free) basic version with the "basic"
texts changed to "FULL". And the included fake register.exe installs a backdoor
on your PC, so stay away from this release. Stay away from illegal software in
general, guys and girls, it harms the developers.

14-03-2004: New MIDI network plugins

I released VSTNETMID, a suite of experimental MIDI network plugins and programs:

MID2VST: This is a VST plugin that takes MIDI input from a system MIDI port and
sends the events as VST MIDI data to the host.

VST2MID: This VST plugin receives VST MIDI data form the host and sends it as
regular MIDI data to a Windows MIDI out port.

VST2NET: This VST plugin sends all VST MIDI data it receives from the host to another
computer in the network or the internet.

NET2VST: This VST plugin listens to a port on the local computer for incoming MIDI
data. When it receives something, it is sent as VST MIDI data to the host.

MID2NET: This is a standalone application that takes MIDI data from any Windows
MIDI input port and sends it over the network just like VST2NET. The receiving
computer (which can also be the same that is sending data) needs to run either NET2MID (see below) or NET2VST.

NET2MID: This standalone program listens to incoming MIDI network data on a
certain port and sends this data to a Windows MIDI out port of your choice.

These plugins and programs are still very experimental! I made quick (successful)
tests in my WLAN network, but I have no idea how it behaves over the internet or
in other LANs. There aren't many configurable options, just the basic features - I will
add more stuff later, but for now, this should be regarded as an experiment!

Once they are out of beta stage, they will be included in the MIDIBag, but at the
moment, you can find them as a separate download on the MIDIBag page.

05-03-2004: Several updates

First of all, the DMOBag has been updated, it should now hopefully work in more
hosts and the internal object handling has been improved.

And here is some good news for all Delphi VST developers:

- The VSTHost Delphi component has been updated again, it is now capable of
hosting VST effects and instruments as well as playing WAV files. The processed
audio stream is sent to an ASIO driver. VST plugins without an own GUI are now
also supported. All in all, this component is now very useful, it seems :-)

- The Delphi VST Template has been updated to 3.0a, mostly some tiny bugfixes in
the template code, but it does now contain the latest version of the DIB components
(which is even newer than the one one Pete Morris' site www.droopyeyes.com
) with
some very important fixes concerning GUIs in VST plugins. The latest documentation
for the VST SDK 2.3 has also been added to the package.

29-02-2004: VSTHost updated again

Christian Budde and I have updated the VSTHost Delphi component again, adding
some fixes and more audioMaster callback functions. It is getting better with each
release :-)

23-02-2004: DMOBag reloaded

Another version of the DMOBag is out today, which adds multi-channel capable
plugins with up to 16 input and output channels! And it couldn't be easier to
configure: just put the desired number of channels in the DLL filename and the
plugin will behave accordingly! For more details read the included manual.

I decided not to include a compiled DLL of the DMO Compressor anymore, as it
does not seem to work with 32-bit floats - there are much better compressors
out there anyway...

19-02-2004: Updated VST host component

The VSTHost Delphi component has been updated. It should now compile with
Delphi 5 to 7. I optimized it a bit, threw out some unnecessary code and fixed
some warnings. This is still a very basic component, if anyone wants to make a
working VST-Host program with MIDI and audio in-/outputs, feel free to do so!

18-02-2004: Newsletter working again

I just found out that the newsletter registration procedure was not working :-(

I fixed it now, so everyone who wants to receive the latest Tobybear news about
new plugin releases and updates, can subscribe
here.

Everyone who had registered in the last two weeks and did not get any new mail
from me, please re-register. Sorry for the inconvenience.

16-02-2004: DMOBag released

Tobybear is once again trying new approaches for VST plugins!

I released the
DMOBag today, which contains VST wrappers for all so-called DMOs
(DirectX Media Objects) included with DirectX9. You only need to have DX9 installed,
then you get two cool reverbs (one from Waves!), chorus, flanger, gargle, EQ,
distortion, compressor and echo, all for free...

I made a mono and a stereo VST plugin for each DMO, added a GUI as well as
VST parameter automation and external MIDI CC control. Oh yes, and the full
Delphi source code is also included :-)

Don't complain about the quality of the DMO effects though, I have no influence
on them, they were coded by Microsoft, I just wrapped them.

15-02-2004: More MP3s

Jacob from www.phreque.com, the nice guy who also does the hosting of this site,
made some more MP3 demos, this time for
SilverBox, RoboBear and WackoFilter.

I also added and updated some links...

12-02-2004: First updates

Some small bugfixes today:

-
ModBag: I fixed some graphical issues with the new ModBag Pro edition,
all registered users should have received their new version by mail.

- FunBag: CandyBox did not remember the skin setting, RoboBear had some
minor graphic glitches - both fixed.

- InsBag: Borderliner could sometimes crash on exit, which should not happen
anymore. I also added 3 preset banks for
Borderliner with some wild FX!

If you have made presets for any of my plugins, feel free to send them in!

06-02-2004: The day they had to go...

The responses to the new website have been great so far, and everything seems
to work fine. The only trouble is that I now had all of my wisdom teeth removed and
don't feel too well :-)

All registered users should have received their new download links by now - if you
bought a plugin from me in the past and did not get an update mail (maybe because
you have a different email address now), please contact me!

R J Kole (
http://www.rjkole.de) contributed two demo MP3s for Helios - thanks!
If you have a nice demo MP3 which uses some of my plugins - feel free to send it
to me!

01-02-2004: New website goes online

As of today, the new version of my website is online!

Yes, finally it is done! After more than a year of work, I can now proudly present
to you:

- A new web page, much better structured than the old one, with an easy to
use navigation system. The pages are built from a template, content comes
from a database, so it is easy to change content and add new pages. This even
includes automatic generation and adaption of navigation menus and buttons.

- A completely reworked VST plugin collection! Yes, all plugins (more than 100!)
have been recompiled with Delphi 6 and do now support the VST 2.3 specification.
Many many bugs have been fixed in almost every plugin, new features added here
and there. Manuals are now available for most of the plugins, even though some
of them are still quite short :-) And the plugins have now been thematically grouped
(eh, sort of) in bundles to make downloading easier for you. MP3 demos for some
plugins are also available, more will follow soon.

The shareware bundles have also been adapted and restructured, see the
products page for details.

Most of my non-shareware plugins are now
Donationware, which I define as:
You are free to use them for whatever you want and as long as you want, but
if you find any use in them, especially in commercial productions, any donation or
other sign of appreciation is certainly appreciated, although not obligatory.

Still not everything is 100% done:
- Considering the re-compile/total re-write of many plugins, it is obvious that some
new (or old) bugs are present, therefore please don't be angry with me if some
of the plugins won't work as expected - write me a friendly mail and I see what
  I can do about it.
- As the new site is now quite complex, some dead links might still pop up here or
there, just send me an email and I fix it.
- There is still a lot of info, links, MP3s and code to add to the page, but that will
be done step by step in the next months.

Comments and suggestions are welcome!

Now have fun browsing my new pages!

Cheers
